Former Key Clubber Joins Kiwanis Club of Pearl Harbor to Continue Service

The Kiwanis Club of Pearl Harbor inducted a new member — Ms Kathryn Lau — a former Leilehua Key Clubber. She was sponsored into the club by President Aladdin Roque-Dangaran. Kathryn and Aladdin were both members of the Leilehua Key Club.

While at Leilehua High School, Kathryn’s college counselor, Vice-President Judy Watanabe encouraged her to consider Olin College of Engineering. Olin College, located in Needham, Massachusetts, believes that engineering is a creative enterprise that begins and ends with people and their desire for a better world. Judy says that Olin seemed to be a good “fit” for Kathryn who is a non-conformist, thinks outside the box, is very logical, and can be easily frustrated with those who “just don’t get it.” Watanabe thought Olin’s method of education would help Kathryn to work with others and emphasize the strengths of her teammates. Kathryn graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and works for Katayama & Associates as a Mechanical Designer. Engineering is the major focus at Olin College. Therefore, classes not available at Olin, such as Arts and Psychology, can be taken at neighboring colleges—Wellesley, Babson, or MIT.
